Obituary for William Paul Centala

Bill Centala was born to Margaret and Alfred Centala on June 9, 1944. He was the third of seven siblings: Mike, Joe, Rose, Diane, Leroy and Susie. He served six years in the U.S. Army, was stationed in Munich, Germany and was a member at the local Polish Legion of American Veterans. He attended trade school and became an electrician in 1967. He met Gloria on his 24th birthday in 1968 and they married on October 24, 1969. Together they raised Judy and Bill Jr. in Bay City. They both live in Grand Rapids with their families. Bill was proud of his kids and grandkids. Judy and Jon (Moerland) have two sons: Asher William and Isaac Abraham. Bill Jr. and Sonja have three daughters: Beth, Jess and Carly Gloria. Bill was a hard worker and provided a good life for his family. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed 18 years of retirement (a year for each hole on the course) after being an electrician for 32 years at General Motors Powertrain.
Bill’s stepfather Willard Wright took him golfing when he was in his twenties and he was hooked. He golfed every chance he could and enjoyed every swing since. He was a devout Catholic and an avid golfer. He rarely missed mass and lived his life by golf rules. Rule #13 explains his attitude toward life. “Play it as it lies”.
Harvey Penick was considered one of the greatest golf teachers who ever lived. Here is an observation Mr. Penick made about the game he so deeply loved and the beauty of rule 13. “Golf is not about fairness. The ball is to be played where it sits. There are benefits to this approach. In golf, as in life, obstacles are placed in our path. In overcoming these roadblocks, our greatest triumphs occur. There are no good or bad lies only what is. When we see things without judgment or complaint, we provide ourselves with the greatest chance for success. It doesn’t guarantee success but it does guarantee us the opportunity to give our best.”
We should all be so blessed to live a life without regret and face the end of our journey without fear as Bill did. “Play it as it lies”.
