Obituary for Roy Alfred Schairer

Roy Alfred Schairer died peacefully on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at McLaren-Bay Region Hospital in Bay City, Michigan, at the age of 84. Roy was born on August 7, 1934, in Sebewaing, Michigan, to Aaron Alfred Schairer and the former Martha Gaeth. He grew up on the family farm, graduated from Sebewaing High School in 1952, and completed his two-year business degree from Northeastern School of Commerce in just nine months.
In 1953, Roy joined the accounting firm that would eventually become Weinlander, Fitzhugh, Bertuleit, and Schairer in Bay City. He became a partner with the frim in 1962 and served as its president for many years. He also held leadership roles in the Michigan Association of CPAs and served as chair of its eastern chapter. He retired from the firm, now known as Weinlander Fitzhugh, in 1996 but remained active as an accountant and business advisor until almost the end of his life.
Roy served in the Michigan National Guard from 1953 to 1961, rising to the rank of sergeant. During his service, he developed a deep respect for the military as well as a lifelong hatred of ferns due to prolonged maneuvers in the Michigan woods at Camp Grayling. This did not diminish, however, his love of the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting pheasant and going fishing on Lake Huron and in Canada.
In 1965, Roy married Beverly Grunewald, originally of Dearborn, Michigan. They first lived on the banks of the Kawkawlin River before building a house in the Carroll Park neighborhood of Bay City. After many years of tender care from Roy, Beverly passed away in 2014 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. They are survived by their son, David and his wife, Nina Nowak, who reside in San Jose, California.
Roy is survived by his sister Dorothy of Bad Axe, Michigan, and predeceased by his brother, Victor, and sisters Mabel Gremel, Mildred Armbruster, and Helen Ruse. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Bay City.
Roy greatly enjoyed travel with Beverly across the United States, Canada, and Europe, as well as sports, politics, and new technology. He was a loyal fan of the Detroit Lions and University of Michigan football teams and in his younger years played baseball and fast-pitch softball on many teams in Bay City and Sebewaing. Well into his senior years, he also won numerous bowling trophies and competitions, including once throwing a 299 game, which he loved to point out was, in fact, statistically harder to accomplish than a 300.
The health and well-being of Roy’s community was of great importance to him. He devoted himself to supporting and advising many local charities, and instilled in his son and in those he knew a strong sense of honesty, plain dealing, hard work, humility, and leadership by example. One of his business partners called him “the purest definition of a quiet yet effective leader.” We can think of no better way to describe him.
Roy’s family would like to thank the many friends, relatives, colleagues, and caregivers who have been with him for many years—from his coworkers at Weinlander Fitzhugh and his fellow Bay City Lions to the staff at Carriage House and McLaren hospital. We would especially like to thank his niece and goddaughter, Joyce Jahr, and his caregiver of the last few years, Brittney Richardson, for all they have done for Roy, and for us.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM on Monday, November 12, 2018, at the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel with Reverend Kevin C. Jones officiating. Private interment will be at Elm Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Schairer Family Scholarship Fund administered by the Bay Area Community Foundation (bayfoundation.org) or the Bay City Lions Club (Michigan Eye Bank). Visiting hours will be on Sunday, November 11, 2018, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM and 10:00 to 11:00 AM Monday at the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel. For on-line sentiments: www.trahanfc.com
