Obituary for EDWARD G. SHAFFER

At the age of 59 years, Edward G. Shaffer died Tuesday, August 1, 2017 in Mid-Michigan Medical Center. He was born in Bay City to Edward V. and Joan Iva Mary (Fisher) Shaffer on November 5, 1957. Ed was a journeyman lineman for over thirty-eight years, working out of I.B.E.W Local #876. In 2001, he went to the Chapman School of Seamanship, in Stewart, FL to become a marine surveyor. Sea Wise Inc. was started and he surveyed boats until 2008. After that he started Sea Wise Hauling, and he transported boats around the country for new owners until 2016. Ed was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Michigan. (Charlevoix Lodge #282), a Saladin Shriner (Shriners International), Northwest Shrine Club, and Order of the Eastern Star (Charlevoix #72). Ed had a gift for helping people. He also loved to share his knowledge with anyone who wanted to learn. He was a lineman who wanted to make it easier for the apprentice and operators to learn and work with him. There was only one way to do a job, and that was the "safe" way. He also had a passion for working on boats. He would look for "orphans" to buy so that he could fix them up and bring them back to their glory on the water. Buffing and waxing was one of the best ways for him to relax and he was often helping friends to get that project done on their boats. In recent years, he had collected (maybe hoarded) vintage snowmobiles. He met and stayed in contact with a lot of other collectors around the country. He could talk to them for hours about different sleds and they had a great network for sharing information and the love of their sport. On October 12, 1991, he was united in marriage to Janice A. Lesperance and they shared their lives together for over twenty-five years. Jan survives him, along with his parents and sister, Deborah Luberda; two aunts and uncles, Carol and Aaron Brack, Janis and Nelson Eddy. He also leaves behind two faithful companions, his Miniature Schnauzers, Cruiser and Harley. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Walter "Vog" Luberda. Cremation has taken place, but not before Ed made one final gift of himself to the Gift of Life and Gift of Sight organizations. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Monday, August 7, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel, 256 N. Madison at Tenth, Bay City, MI, with Sr. Joann Plumpe, O.P. presiding. Memorial contributions may be directed to American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association. Visiting hours are Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Trahan Chapel.
