Obituary for Carmella J. "Carmie" Dishaw

Carmella J. Dishaw, age 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 30, 2018 at her residence. The daughter of the late Edward and Josephine (Nellett) Shafer, Carmie was born on April 21, 1923 in Bay City. She was a proud graduate of St. James High School class of 1941. During WWII Carmie served her country with the WAVES of the U.S. Navy. On May 11, 1946 she married Gerald G. Dishaw. Carmie was very happy to live nearly her entire life at 212 Garfield Ave., “Dishaw Apartments” until she and Jerry moved to the Colonnades six years ago. She was a member of All Saints Parish – St. James Church, the Altar Society and also the League of Catholic Women and Men and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Carmie was an avid volunteer at Created for Caring and the Santa House, and for over 30 years she operated the gift carts at both General and Mercy Hospitals.

Carmie is survived by her beloved husband of 71 years, Gerald G. Dishaw; four children, James (Debbie) Dishaw of Alanson, David A. (Patricia) Dishaw of Freeland, Patrick (Susan) Dishaw of Saginaw Twp. and Bridget Ann Accetta of Fenton, and Alger (Gail) Mockaitis and Valerie LeMaster both of whom are very close to the family. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Dishaw; and her sister, Alberta Pickering.

The Dishaw’s would like to thank the Ken and Mary Jane Legner Family and Mel and Marie Polega for their friendship and love, the staff of the Colonnades for their exceptional care over the years, and to Carmie’s special caregivers, Donna DeWyse and Alice Meyer for everything they’ve done to provide comfort and support.

The Funeral Liturgy will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at All Saints Parish – St. James Church. The Celebrant will be Fr. Jose Cabrera with Military Honors following conducted by the U.S. Navy and the Bay County Veterans Council. Private interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Elementary School. Visiting hours will be at the church only on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the W.A. Trahan Funeral Chapel. For on-line sentiments: www.trahanfc.com
